Officers Brandi Madrid and Candace Bisagna, who showed up on the scene where a man tried to commit suicide by jumping over an overpass, truly deserve the Most Patient Rescue Officer Reward.
They spent about three hours talking a desperate man into abandoning his deadly intention. Women didn’t threaten him with fines for disturbing public order, neither did they shame him or appeal to his sense of duty. All they did was just talking to him about the family and truly listening to his answers showing superior compassion. Unfortunately, drivers passing by failed to be as compassionate shouting different offensive comments out their windows. It is a pity that not everyone believes a man in trouble deserves support and at least minimal understanding.
This seemingly typical case from two police officers' practice shows that sometimes help means just letting people express and respond to what bothers them.
