HIGHLIGHT: Stephen Curry, reigning Most Valuable Player of the NBA, wears the Filipino Heritage Night tee, which feature the three stars and a sun of the Philippine flag and the Golden State logo in vivid graphics.
Manila, Philippines -The Filipino community in the Bay area can say they are truly blessed – as Stephen Curry and his Golden State Warriors teammates paid tribute to Filipino heritage as they pounded Dallas Mavericks, 128-120, in the final matchup, Friday, March 25 (Saturday, March 26, Manila time).
In a Facebook post, Curry, reigning Most Valuable Player of the NBA, was seen wearing the Filipino Heritage Night tee, which feature the three stars and a sun of the Philippine flag and the Golden State logo in vivid graphics.
The Warriors, also the season’s defending champion, celebrated the eighth annual Filipino Heritage Night for the second time this season with a surprise – being the first team to wear the tees during pre-game warm ups.
In a Balitang America report last December, Jennifer Cabalquinto, Chief Financial Officer of the Warriors, said, “I always tease everyone that we can make every night Filipino Heritage Night because if you look at the crowd, it is a very strong fan base for us.” (http://www.balitangamerica.tv/golden-state-warriors-show-pinoy-pride-at-filipino-heritage-night/)
The heritage shirts called “Kampeon” (Champion), made by international sports brand Adidas, are still being sold by NBA stores for $27 apiece, around Php1,200.
Meanwhile, boxing champion Nonito Donaire Jr was one of the Filipinos who expressed jubilance being on the #WarriorGrounds in Oakland, California that night.
He proudly showed three different jerseys, all personalized for him and his two sons, Jarel and Logan. The five-division world champion had resided in the Bay area when he was 10 years old and married Filipino-American Rachel Donaire.
San Francisco-based dance group Likha Pilipino Folk Ensemble brought Filipino cultural music and dance in the spotlight during half-time.
The team’s Facebook post yesterday said that all event proceeds will be “donated back to support local Filipino organizations throughout the Bay area.”
