Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara has been pushing for the passage of a bill which integrates Filipino-Muslim and indigenous people’s history, culture, and identity in the study of Philippine History.
Senator Angara announced that the Integrated History Act was recently passed in the Senate and the House of Representatives. As of the moment, the bill is just awaiting the signature of incumbent President Benigno “PNoy” Aquino III.
“There is a need to integrate the history, culture and identity studies of Filipino-Muslims and indigenous people in the grand narrative of Philippine history if we want to create an inclusive history that accounts for all Filipinos,” Angara, the author of the bill, said in a statement on Thursday.
Angara said that under the measure, respective agencies of the government are obliged to hear known experts on Filipino-Muslim and indigenous people’s history, culture, and identity in developing the curriculum with an aim “for an inclusive and integrative study of Philippine history, including the writing, printing and publication of textbooks and other reading materials.”
He emphasized that this is one way of crafting the minds of the youth for the better understanding of such topic.
Senator Pia Cayetano added that this bill would help the youth have an idea of the culturally different groups of Filipinos.
“As the country elected its first president from Mindanao, it is high time that we aim for a more inclusive study of our history to foster a culture of peace in the country,” Angara said.
Earlier, Senator Angara expressed his support for an all-out fight against illegal drugs of the incoming administration and hopes for more agreeable proposals, such as imposition of additional taxes on junk food.
“Sobra na ang problema sa droga ng bansa kaya sinusuportahan ko ang all-out war sa drugs,” Senator Sonny Angara said in a statement.
(There is a serious problem on drugs in our country and that is why I am supporting an all-out war against illegal drugs.)
