An American political expert has revealed that the US government is closely monitoring the actions and words of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte.
According to Bower, the United States is most interested in watching Duterte’s political moves in his first 100 days of being the new president of the country. The U.S. is also awaiting Duterte’s reaction to the highly-anticipated United Nations tribunal court ruling on the territorial dispute between the Philippines and China.
Bower added that the strength of the relationship between the U.S. and the Philippines reached a two-decade high during the administration of outgoing President Benigno Aquino II. The political analyst believes that the president-elect would not put into vain all of the hard work done by his predecessor.
Despite Duterte’s controversial comments, particularly about the media killings in the country and the Catholic Church, Bower believes that the public should wait and see how the president-elect would perform as the country’s leader.
He added that the U.S. government is not paying too much attention to Duterte’s hyperbolic statements, such as riding a jet ski to one of the disputed islands in the Spratlys or threatening to cut ties with Washington. Bower believes that those statements were said by Duterte just to make noise for himself during the campaign.
