The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced over the weekend that the law and due process will prevail and that there will be no vigilante killings involved in its fight against drugs and crimes.
Supt. Gilbert Gorero, Western Visayas Regional Office (PRO-6) spokesperson released a statement following reports stating that extrajudicial killings have started to take place in the city and province of Iloilo.
Gorero reiterated that “the rule of law and due process must be followed.” He also said the PRO-6 is preparing its personnel as part of the police agency’s process in going-after over 1,000 drug personalities in the region.
PRO-6 Director Chief Supt. Bernardo Diaz said that the number includes 540 from around the Iloilo province while 150 is said to be from Iloilo City.
On Saturday, two men with criminal records were reported to have been found dead with gunshot wounds. Lou Facto, 33, was found dead at Iloilo City’s Arevalo district while Sherwin Taasan, 38, was found lifeless in an empty lot in Brgy. San Vicente, Leganes.
According to Manila Bulletin, Facto, an ex-convict, was found to have both hands were found to be tied behind his back with packing tape while 11 gunshot wounds were found around his body. Taasan, was also found to have both hands tied behind his back and with six gunshot wounds. He was a snatcher and allegedly a murderer.
Also, last Friday, practicing lawyer, Atty. Rex Perewperew was shot in broad daylight by two unidentified gunmen riding in tandem on a motorcycle in Sitio Laguna road, Looc, Dumaguete city.
According to authorities, Perewperew was allegedly involved in illegal drugs and had been jailed for years. He is listed as “Number 3 in the Philippine National Police (PNP)’s Lambat-Sibat” order in Siquijor Island before he was killed, according to Negros Oriental PNP Director, Sr. Supt. Harris Fama.
Fama said Perewperew has been the subject of police monitoring “due to alleged engagements in illegal drugs for the past several years until the time he was assassinated by unidentified gunmen.”
He said the lawyer had been on board a pedicab when two men on a motorcycle came around to shoot him repeatedly at close range, resulting to his death.
