President-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) has gained another formidable ally in National Unity Party (NUP).
The two parties signed the Coalition for Change Agreement at a Makati hotel on Thursday.
Garcia further added, “This is NUP’s support to the socio-economic agenda of the Duterte administration.”
Former Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) General Manager and next Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi and Davao del Norte Representative Pantaleon Alvarez, vice chairman and secretary general of PDP-Laban represented PDP during the signing. On the other hand, NUP was represented by its chairman, Antipolo Representative Roberto Puno and Gov. Garcia, the party’s president.
With NUP’s support, Alvarez’ bid for speakership in the 17th Congress is right in the bag. Alvarez is Duterte’s anointed bet. NUP holds one of the biggest blocs in Congress with 32 members and party officials. The party is expecting more lawmakers to come over its side.
PDP-Laban has also cemented its alliance with other political groups like the Nacionalista Party, the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), and the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrat (Lakas-CMD).
