After the clear win for Rodrigo Duterte in the Presidential elections, the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) submitted a list on Thursday, May 26, identifying at least 10 nominees - which included 4 women - for the cabinet positions that they were offered.
Duterte said in an interview on Wednesday night that the list had a very impressive list of nominees and is inclined to give in to them.
He added that the list was given to him on Tuesday night and that most of them are from the University of the Philippines. Among the nominees who made it to the list are two ex-solons: Anakpawis Representative Rafael Mariano and Bayan Muna Representative Carlos Isagani Zarate, ex-University of the Philippines (UP) Professor Judy Taguiwalo, and Solicitor-General Silvestre Bello III.
Nominees are for the Department of of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Agrarian Reform, and Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Although Duterte said that the Department of Department of Labor and Employment may be involved.
He also said he may leave the DSWD up to them on one condition: That they would not give all the food to rural areas.
And in an attempt to alleviate the problem regarding mining, the incoming president is looking to prioritize the DENR.
But Duterte says that appointing someone from the Left to lead DENR may be a problem. Duterte stated that the only way to solve the mining problem is to use the military. That this may be the happy compromise that we are looking for.
He has still yet to pass the document over to the screening committee and says that the nominees’ affiliation will not pose as a problem to him.
Joma Sison, founder of the Communist Party of the Philippines has previously told reporters that they will be nominating candidates who do not necessarily come from the communist party but are progressive and competent individuals that he is confident to represent the interest of the left and the country.
