South African coronavirus variant can bind easily to human cells - report

- The coronavirus has a lot of strains, which made it somewhat difficult for scientists during the early phase of the pandemic to find the best treatment against it or in coming up with a vaccine

- Now, a reported new strain was found in South Africa and reports noted that it readily binds to human cells

- An epidemiologist noted that his character of this strain makes it more infectious

- So far vaccine manufacturers have noted that the vaccines can very well fight off against the different coronavirus strains

Scientists have found new biological evidence that the new strain found in South Africa is said to be more infectious.

They have found that the new strain can readily bind to human cells, GMA News reported.

Salim Abdool Karim, a recognized local epidemiologist stated during a presentation of the research made into the variant.

The new variant is known as the 501Y.V2. It was identified late last year by experts.

Forbes noted that the South Africa coronavirus strain that was first identified in the said country last year is considered 50 percent more contagious.

Although it is more contagious, there is still no evidence to indicate that the new variant is more deadly nor it would cause more symptoms.
