Gardo Versoza: Jaclyn Jose deserves a Pacman welcome

Gardo Versoza bares his dismay for lack of hero's welcome after Jaclyn Jose's becomes the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to win the Best Actress Award during the 69th Cannes Film Festival.

According to Gardo, Jaclyn Jose must be given a hero’s welcome as she deserves it, especially after she won the Best Actress award for Brillante Mendoza’s film Ma’Rosa during the recently concluded Cannes Film Festival.

Gardo said that a huge banner should be seen at the airport upon Jaclyn’s arrival. It should bear a congratulatory message for waving the Filipino banner high during the festival.

However, none of this happened and the actor decided to voice out his disappointment in what he sees as blatant disregard for the actress in contrast to how the Filipinos welcome the boxing champion every time he comes home from a fight – win or lose.

Gardo pointed out that if we can give a boxer a hero’s welcome even if he loses a fight, why cannot the public do the same and honor Jaclyn who won from a big and international film festival like Cannes.

“Hindi pa ba sapat iyon na si Jane ang kauna-unahang Pinay na manalo doon (Isn’t it enough that Jane is the first-ever Filipina to win an award [in Cannes]?,” the actor said.

Jane Guck is the real name of Jaclyn Jose. She is the co-star of Gardo in an upcoming Kapuso comedy series A1 Ko Sa ‘Yo.

The actor also wondered why the individuals belonging to the entertainment industry are given a different treatment than the athletes.

“Ibang tao nabibigyan nila ng bonggang welcome (They can give other people a grand welcome). Pero pagdating sa ating mga artista, kahit na ilan na ang nag-uwi ng parangal mula sa mga international film festivals, parang dedma ang gobyerno natin (However, when it comes to celebrities, the government seems not to care no matter how many awards we bring home for the country from international film festivals),” he said.

Gardo sited Director Brillante Mendoza as an example. He said that Mendoza has won numerous awards from different festivals around the globe, yet not even once was he given a grand welcome. This, Gardo said, has become very frustrating.

He hopes that the government will not put to waste the recognition achieved by Jaclyn as it does not happen often.
