Risa Hontiveros believes millennials care about the Philippines

Sen. Risa Hontiveros shared with Enchong Dee her thoughts about various issues in the country, including her insights about today’s youth.

Enchong Dee got the chance to interview the senator for a vlog that was posted on December 6, Sunday.

One of the issues that became a main topic for the interview was the character trait that the Filipino youth have in general.

According to the senator who is known to support mental health advocacy in the country, she appreciates how the young people now show care for the current issues the Philippines is facing.

“I think it’s the same for all generations — na every time na the country was going through a process of change, ang daming young people na naging involved. Basically, young people care. You care,” the senator shared.

Furthermore, Sen. Hontiveros expressed that she does not believe in the opinion of older individuals who say that the Pinoy millennials are indifferent to what is happening in the country.

“There was a few years ago na nauso na ‘yong mga critics would say ‘Ay nako, ang mga millennials walang pakialam. ‘Di nila inaalam ang mga isyu, ‘di nila naiitindihan. They don’t care. I never swallowed that,”

For her, there is a need to have an “inter-generation dialogue” between the generations so that they can connect.

“Baka you just have a different way of appreciating it, a different way of expressing it. So kailangan, i-reconnect natin ang generations — have that inter-generation dialogue of like my generation. My generation, we also cared when we were young,” she explained.

The senator also emphasized the importance of belief and respect. According to her, we need to respect the young generation and believe that they do care. She also told Enchong that the youth is a source of hope.

For the senator, the Filipino youth must continue to fight for their beliefs. She also thinks that it is in the DNA of the Filipinos to fight and that we have proven and survived.

“Hindi ko naman gusto maging simplistic pero I think nasa DNA nating mga Pinoy kasi we just have to fight every time Enchong. In fighting and fighting again since time immemorial, well napatunayan naman natin, nag-survive tayo.”

Sen. Risa Hontiveros currently serves as a senator of the Philippines since 2016. She was once the Akbayan representative in the House of Representatives.
