Catriona Gray’s participation in Miss Universe Colombia 2020 as one of the pageant judges recently became controversial due to the pageant's introduction to the beauty queen.
During the pageant, Catriona was introduced as “Australian by birth but represented Philippines after living for a few years there”.
Netizens also noticed that the Pinay beauty queen’s surname was flashed on the screen as “Garay” instead of Gray.
Natalie Ackerman, President and National Director of Miss Universe Colombia Organization, then immediately issued a statement to apologize to Catriona.
Here’s her full statement:
“Miss Universe Colombia’s quintessential essence is to promote and value UNITY, PEACE, COMPASSION, HUMILITY and KINDNESS and we would like to express our utmost gratitude to Catriona Gray as being one of the esteemed judges for Miss Universe Colombia, for supporting Smile Train and for spreading the positivity and kindness which is the paragon of the values that we also believe.
We would also like to express our apologies for the mistake of her last name due to some language barrier and the announcement that she was born in Australia — the translated language that was sent for introduction is — ‘Born in Australia, from the Philippines who is Miss Universe 2018', it is honestly part of the cultural differences as here in Colombia, we regard the value of unity and cross cultural importance.
We assure that there is no malice intended as we invited Catriona Gray in the first place because we believe in Filipinos and having a personal Dubai-based friend, who is like a brother to me, I have always admired the Filipino culture and the kindness of the people from the Philippines.
I hope that Catriona will not take this matter against us and can forgive us and our management. We are absolutely thrilled to visit the beautiful country of the Philippines soon.
“Mahal ko kayong lahat and Mabuhay!”
Catriona Gray is the fourth Pinay who brought home the Miss Universe crown in 2018. She is also a singer and is very active with the foundation that she's working on.
Miss Universe Colombia 2020 pageant's introduction to her immediately went viral on social media after Filipino pageant fans reacted to it. The Miss Universe 2018 then took to her Instagram Stories to simply post “Filipina” after the said incident.
Earlier, Catriona calmly replied to a netizen who asked about her presence in Colombia amid the onslaught of Typhoon Ulysses. The prominent beauty queen garnered the said criticism after sharing snaps on her social media page.
