Rachelle and Jayson decided to have their third child in 2005. After four months, their hopes and prayers were answered with the help of fertility treatments.
However, something incredible happened during Rachelle’s ultrasound – the doctor detected five heartbeats! It turned out that Rachelle was carrying five babies. Rachelle and Jayson were going to have quintuplets.
Unfortunately, there are some dangerous risks that come with carrying five babies at once. The doctor recommended to selectively abort three of the five fetuses in order to increase the chances of survival of the two fetuses.
Being pregnant with multiple babies can lead to serious complications for the mother such as premature birth, preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.
Giving birth to multiple babies can also result in newborn babies having poorly developed lungs, brain and other organs; being more susceptible to different infections and diseases due to a weak immune system; having a lower than normal newborn weight; breathing difficulties; and the rare but serious case of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.
Despite all of these dangerous risks, Rachelle and Jayson decided to carry all of the babies for as long as they could. Their decision turned out to be the right one as Rachelle was able to successfully give birth on July 31, 2007, to all five babies: three girls and two boys.
But because of the various tests and exams that the babies need to undergo to in order to check their health and wellbeing, Rachelle was not able to visit her quintuplets for the first few days of the babies’ life.
In the incredible video below, Jayson was able to film Rachelle seeing her five babies for the very first time. It is a miraculous, intimate and heartwarming video that has become viral. Jayson and Rachelle’s decision to save all of their babies definitely paid off.
