Two humble heroes showed the world what it is like to act selflessly in the midst of a calamity.
In ABS-CBN's report, two neighbors who were childhood friends ended up dying but were able to save the lives of a mother and son, who also happened to be their neighbors.
Neri Abalos and Randy Valdes, during the deluge, responded to a cry for help from their neighbor.
Utilizing Neri's boat, they reached the mother and son and were able to successfully get them out of their submerged home.
While on their way back to safe ground, witnesses said that they saw a jolt of electricity and while other neighbors were able to pull in the mother and son, the two brave souls were not able to make it to safer ground.
They were taken by the current and two days later were found dead.
In a tweet, Jeff Canoy noted that the daughter of Neri, Angelica, said that her father has been very helpful. He did not think of himself even for once. She said that people say her father is a hero, but reality states that they do not have a father anymore.
The wrath of Typhoon Ulysses was unexpected. Although Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon were already bracing themselves for what Ulysses could bring, its onslaught became a nightmare for everyone. The Mayor of Marikina was among those praised by netizens for his hands-on approach in the rescue efforts.
With the strength of the typhoon, it is very much likely that things that are inside the house could either be swept away or end up submerged in water. Many netizens shared the situation of their homes when the typhoon hit and virtually all of their appliances and furniture were damaged by the floodwaters. When the water subsided, the floodwaters left a lot of mud.
The devastation can be seen in various footage. Social media became a rescue hotline. One resident in Quezon City sought the help of rescue teams after being stranded due to the typhoon.
