Velasco installed as new Speaker with overwhelming majority votes

- A total of 186 members of the House of Representatives elected Hon. Lord Allan Velasco as Congress' new Speaker

- Velasco is the representative of Marinduque and the votes cast for him was more than just simple majority

- Allies of Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano, however, called the move as illegal, to the point that Cayetano had a Facebook Live session to slam the said move

- The election transpired at the Celebrity Sports complex in Quezon City, which is said to be a 17-minute drive from the Batasang Complex

Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco took his oath as the Speaker of the House of Representatives before 186 congressmen at the Celebrity Sports Complex in Quezon City, Inquirer reported.

The 186 congressmen comprise an overwhelming number as they constitute the majority of 299 congressmen, Rappler narrated.

The speech of Velasco was, "At ako po, inyong abang lingkod, Lord Allan Jay Velasco, ay taus-pusong tumatanggap sa hamon na maging Speaker ng Kamara de Representante."

CNN reported that Velasco called on Cayetano and extended his hand and said that he hoped the latter would be amenable to discuss compliance on the agreement and how to have a peaceful transition for the benefit of Congress and the country.

Rep. Allan Cayetano once became controversial after a video of him talking to Mocha Uson and Banat By surfaced where he was allegedly coaching Uson on how to purchase interviews from traditional media. The said video allegedly was taken when Cayetano was still Foreign Affairs Secretary.

In a more recent event, prior to Velasco being sworn in, Rep. Cayetano also offered to resign as Speaker but the House plenary voted and officially rejected the offer of Cayetano to resign.

Hon. Lord Allan Jay Velasco is the representative from Marinduque. He is the son of retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Presbitero Velasco, Jr.
