- However, Cayetano said that he believed Velasco will not win against him or he will be ousted if he becomes the new House Speaker
- The House plenary immediately voted and officially rejected the resignation offer of Cayetano
- Cayetano’s term as the House Speaker is expected to end next month as part of his agreement with President Rodrigo Duterte and Velasco
Alan Peter Cayetano offered to resign as the House Speaker on Wednesday following his meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday.
KAMI learned that the House plenary quickly rejected the resignation of Cayetano via voting.
In a report by ABS-CBN News (authored by Jauhn Etienne Villaruel), Cayetano said that he is willing to end his speakership as Marinduque Rep. Lord Velasco told President Duterte he is ready to be the House Speaker.
“Congressman Velasco told the President that he is ready. Then I think the best time for him to prove it is now. Gusto mo ng Sept. 30? Sige. If our colleagues want you today, ikaw na,” Cayetano said.
“Under the Constitution, you need the majority of all members to be elected speaker. So I can step aside. But I can guarantee he will not be elected. In fact, I will make a fearless forecast: Hindi siya mananalo. Or if I step aside, mananalo siya after one week makukudeta siya. Bakit? Maraming popular sa Kongreso,” he added.
As posted by CNN Philippines on Facebook, the House officially rejected the resignation offer of Cayetano with votes: 184-1-9.
According to a report by Inquirer (authored by Daphne Galvez), President Duterte met with Cayetano and Velasco on Tuesday about the speakership issue.
Born on October 28, 1970, Alan Cayetano is a Filipino politician and the Representative of Taguig City-Pateros. He had an agreement with President Duterte that he would split the speakership with Velasco and his term is expected to end next month.
Months ago, Cayetano and Mocha Uson were trending after footage of them talking about buying interview from traditional media went viral on social media.
Meanwhile, President Duterte said earlier that he already offered to resign due to the endless corruption in the government.
