President Rodrigo Duterte, for the first time, spoke at the United Nations General Assembly.
The President reiterated the country's stand in upholding the 2016 Arbitral Award by the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
In ABS-CBN's report, he also affirmed the country's commitment on the South China Sea, following the regulations set by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas.

It can be recalled that the President has refrained from asserting the country's rights in the midst of conflict in the South China Sea. He even previously considered himself as "inutile" in the face of the territorial claims of China.
Now, he has changed his stance and is upholding the UNCLOs and the 2016 arbitral award.

According to the Daily Guardian, aside from the reiteration of the arbitral ruling, the President also highlighted how Filipino health care workers are making a huge contribution to fighting the coronavirus at home and in other countries.
Previously, Duterte slammed Vice President Robredo because of her COVID-19 remarks. he also said that people must not believe what VP said regarding the government's response.
Former Speaker Alvarez has just called the COVID-19 response of Pres. Duterte as a failure.
Recently, VP Leni Robredo also said that it is not enough to just wait for COVID-19 vaccine.
