New DOJ secretary to Duterte's critics: Don't judge

The incoming DOJ Secretary, Vitaliano Aguirre, came to presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte's defense as critics started judging his cabinet picks to be far from Canadian Prime Mister Justine Trudeau's, contrary to what was promised early on.

Aguirre told ANC's Headstart on Tuesday that it might be too early to judge since Duterte isn't finish laying out his appointments yet.

To date, Duterte has named a predominantly male Cabinet, with only one woman offered a seat. Andrea Domingo was endorsed to head the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).

Aguirre also came in to respond criticisms that Duterte's picks were an all-boys club, saying that most were faces that weren't new in the political arena and have held cabinet positions in the past administration.

"Had Gibo Teodoro or Peter Laurel accepted the portfolios, they would have been the new faces," Aguirre said. While Gilbert Teodoro remains undecided and continues to give the offer to be defense secretary much more consideration, Peter Laurel, Lyceum University of the Philippines - Batangas president, a Laurel scion, has already declined the offer to be Secretary of Education.

In response to criticisms on appointments of several picks serving under former presidents Gloria Arroyo and Fidel Ramos, the incoming justice secretary said that it is only natural that the incoming president appoints qualified individuals he is both confident that he can trust to get the job done.

"If you are the appointing authority, di mo maaalis yun e. you will appoint only people you know and ones that you trust," Aguirre said.

"Napakahirap namang alisin mo muna yung mga kaibigan mo, ‘wag muna kayo dyan, and then I’ll go find somewhere’. Lalong di ka makakakuha ng magaling na tao; samantalang ito kilala mo na," the incoming DOJ secretary added.

Aguirre then appealed to the people to give Duterte a chance to prove himself as he has already been elected into Malacañang.

Aguirre appeals to the people to give President Duterte a chance to prove himself as he gets sworn into Malacañang. He remains that it is premature to judge his picks without him being done yet.

"Tulungan natin siya because it’s very hard for him to succeed without our help," he added.
