President Rodrigo Duterte defended Health Secretary Francisco Duque III anew against those who wanted him to be removed from his post amid the coronavirus disease or COVID-19.
KAMI learned that for President Duterte, Duque should not be blamed for the COVID-19.
In a report by Inquirer (authored by Darryl John Esguerra), President Duterte asked the critics what was the “sin” of Duque amid the crisis.
“Secretary Duque, they want your neck. Then I said: ‘Okay, you want me to fire Duque?’ Let me be satisfied. What was his sin? He did not import COVID,” Duterte said.
“He was there all the time and ang infection was overwhelming not only for the Philippines. I do not want to compare it with any country, but it was a global thing,” he added.
Recently, Duque has been receiving criticisms for the way he has been handling the COVID-19 situation in the country.
The Department of Health (DOH) reported a total of 103,185 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country as of Sunday, August 2, 2020.
When DOH made a different data interpretation, former senator and now Sorsogon governor Chiz Escudero was one of the first officials who aired their thoughts about this. He also asked President Duterte to fire Duque immediately.
About a month ago, the Office of the Ombudsman started to investigate Duque and other DOH officials after it received many complaints about its COVID-19 response.
