Philippine social media went abuzz once again after veteran actress Jacklyn Jose won for the country its first Best Actress award from the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
The hashtag #motorcade4jacklyn started to make its wave on Twitter and Facebook when the Filipinos awoke to a wonderful news on Monday that its very own Jacklyn Jose won the Best Actress award in the 69 Cannes Film Festival, the first for the country and for Southeast Asia, in her role as a mother who peddles drug in Brillante Mendoza’s film, Ma’Rosa.
A netizen with the username @SaNgalanNgIna posted that the film by Brillante Mendozza should be screened in Malacanang, Congress, and Camp Crame “for them to take action,” in a seeming reference to the country's problem with drugs and corruption.
Another netizen with the username @namstagram even commented: “Pinoy pride doesn't end with boxing matches and beauty pageants. RISE, PHILIPPINE CINEMA! RISE! #Motorcade4Jaclyn”
The last Filipino to be given such an honor for a homecoming was Pia Wurtzbach for winning the Miss Universe 2015, several decades after the country last won the title. In the past, Manny Pacquaio was regularly given a motorcade after his victorious boxing fights.
Some netizens even quoted her dialogue from her previous screen role.
Jacklyn Jose is a known actress from the Philippines and has done numerous films and television soaps.
With an acting nod from the Cannes jury, Jose now joins the ranks of illustrious names who have won the award including Julianne Moore, Juliette Binoche, Katherine Hepburn, Kirsten Dunst, and Meryl Streep.
In her acceptance speech, Jose thanked Brillante Mendoza, who has also won in the past a Best Director award from Cannes, and gave a salute to the Filipino people.
“I thank the director Brillante Mendoza, whose instructions I simply followed,” she said.
“He’s a brilliant director, a genius. I am so happy you liked the film. I’d like to salute the Filipino people,” she added.
In a show of gratitude, Filipino netizens are congratulating Jacklyn Jose and the whole Ma’Rosa team for being another source of pride for the country.
Aside from Jacklyn Jose, the film also stars her real-life daughter Andi Eigenmann, veteran actor Julio Diaz, Felix Rocco, Jomari Angeles, and Maria Isabel Lopez who made waves in the Cannes red carpet.
