Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte plans to use the presidential yacht BRP Ang Pangulo as a floating hospital since he cannot immediately sell it as originally planned.
"Gagawin ko na lang 'yang hospital so kung saan 'yung conflict areas, whether it is a war or whatever, i-parking ko 'yan doon," Duterte said.
Davao City Mayor said that the presidential yacht has 20 cabins which can be renovated and transformed into a medical facility.
In an earlier announcement, Duterte had said that he will be selling the presidential yacht, Ang Pangulo, once sworn in office. During an interview, Davao reporters were also told that the proceeds from the sale of the yacht will be allocated to war veterans, improvement of hospital facilities, and salaries for doctors to curb down brain drain and encourage them to pursue their careers in the Philippines.
Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla, spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), said that there are certain procedures for the alienation of government and military assets. As the Ang Pangulo is considered to be one, the president-elect will be required to create an evaluation committee to ascertain whether the sale is needed.
"Sabi ni Padilla, hindi raw maipagbili iyung 'Pangulo' kasi may proseso pa raw daanan. Natural, ano 'yan, maruya na sabihin mong pabili nga," Duterte said, acknowledging the need to undergo procedures.
