Potential COVID vaccine gets tested on 8 humans & yields encouraging results

Moderna, a US biotech firm, gave some positive news on the potential vaccine against COVID-19.

In a report by Agence-France Presse and ABS-CBN News, the potential vaccine called mRNA-1237 appeared to provide an immune response to eight people who received it, based on the first clinical trials.

"These interim phase 1 data, while early, demonstrate that vaccination with mRNA-1273 elicits an immune response of the magnitude caused by natural infection," Moderna’s chief medical officer Tal Zaks stated.

The US government has invested around $500 million in the development of Moderna’s potential vaccine.

More clinical trials will be done involving the potential vaccine which will involve a larger number of participants.

Aside from mRNA-1237, there are other good news when it comes to potential treatment options for COVID-19.

Japan approved Gilead Sciences Inc's remdesivir as the country’s first officially authorized drug against COVID-19.

In the US, a study that involved 1,000 patients also gave positive news on remdesivir.

NBC News (authored by Erika Edwards) reported that the patients who received remdesivir were discharged from the hospital within 11 days compared to the 15 days of the patients who received a placebo.

Based on a report by The Guardian (authored by Sarah Bosely), 8 percent of the patients who received the drug died of COVID-19 compared to the 11 percent of the placebo group.
