The Kapuso network clarified the claim on social media that it was allowed to operate even after the expiration of its 25-year legislative franchise in 2017.

KAMI learned that the said speculation circulated after its rival network officially signed off for not being able to secure a franchise before its expiration on May 4.

Many netizens claimed that if GMA-7 was allowed to operate after its franchise expiration, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) can also do the same to ABS-CBN.

However, the Kapuso network set the record straight about the said issue. It revealed that a new franchise was given 22 days prior to the expiration of the old franchise.

It stated that on April 21, 2017, President Rodrigo Duterte signed the Republic Act No. 10925 or “An Act Renewing for Another Twenty-Five (25) Years the Franchise Granted to Republic Broadcasting System, Inc., Presently Known as GMA Network, Inc…”

At the latter part of GMA-7’s statement, it reiterated that the circulating information on social media about its franchise renewal was baseless and not true.

"GMA Network, Inc. clarifies the case of its franchise renewal as it has been cited several times recently in light of the current situation of fellow broadcast network, ABS-CBN…” the network quipped.

“It is important to note that there is no parity of circumstances between the two broadcast networks. And that there is no truth to statements claiming that GMA continued its operations despite the expiration of its franchise, which was in fact renewed earlier than its expiry date,” it added.

In a previous article by KAMI, a former host in the Kapuso network slammed “24 Oras” for its recent interview about ABS-CBN closure.

GMA-7 is one of the most popular media and entertainment firms in the country. It is known for its award-winning documentaries, programs, and news coverage.
