- Manny Pacquiao learned about the controversial closure of giant network ABS-CBN
- He immediately released a statement regarding the decision of the National Telecommunications Commission
- He said that this is not a good time to shut down one of the biggest media networks in the country
- He also urged NTC to keep its promise of giving provisional authority to ABS-CBN
Senator Manny Pacquiao was made aware of the “cease and desist” order issued by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) on May 5 against ABS-CBN.
KAMI learned that the Filipino boxing legend immediately issued an honest statement about the controversial action of the said government agency.
After the giant network decided to go off the air, the senator told NTC to keep its promise of giving channel 2 a provisional authority to continue its broadcast operations.
He pointed out that a lot of people are relying on the news and information that ABS-CBN delivers through radio and television.
He also mentioned that while the law needs to be implemented at all times and cost, there is no need to be divided especially during a pandemic.
The 8-division world champion further stated that although he believes the cease and desist order has nothing to do with curtailing press freedom, the timing of its release is not good.
“Wala naman sigurong mawawala sa atin kapag nabigyan ng provisional authority to operate ng NTC ang ABS-CBN… There is no question that the law should be implemented at all cost, but we are now in the middle of a war against an unseen enemy…” he quipped.
“Hindi maganda ang timing ng implementasyon nito dahil tayo ay nasa kalagitnaan ngayon ng giyera laban sa COVID-19 virus. Sinusuportahan natin ang ABS-CBN lalo na’t minsan ay naging bahagi rin ako ng Kapamilya network at hanggang ngayon ay itinuturing pa rin akong kapamilya,” he added.
In a previous article by KAMI, Pacquiao admitted that he is praying to God that President Rodrigo Duterte will reverse the decision of the NTC.
Manny Pacquiao is one of the most prominent Filipino athletes. He brought pride to the Philippines after winning against the toughest boxers in the world such as Ricky Hatton and Keith Thurman.
