The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has issued on Tuesday a cease and desist order against ABS-CBN.
KAMI learned that the network’s 25-year franchise to operate already expired on May 4 and Congress has yet to renew it.
The said agency pointed out that under Republic Act No. 3846, there shall be no person, firm, or corporation that is allowed to “construct, install, establish, or operate a radio transmitting station, or radio receiving station used for commercial purposes, or a radio broadcasting station, without having first obtained a franchise from therefor Congress of the Philippines.”
Through a statement posted on social media, NTC confirmed that it has ordered ABS-CBN to stop its operation until a franchise is granted to the corporation.
It also stated that a hearing will be scheduled after it receives the response of the network and once the enhanced community quarantine is lifted.
“Upon the expiration of RA 7966, ABS-CBN no longer has a valid and subsisting congressional franchise as required by Act No. 3846. The NTC Regional Offices shall implement the closure order in their respective areas of jurisdiction,” the NTC said.
“After receipt of ABS-CBN’s response, the NTC shall schedule the case for hearing at the earls time after he Enhanced Community Quarantine is lifted by the Government,” it added.
