DOST: Virgin coconut oil may work as a cure against COVID-19

- DOST-Davao director Anthony Sales gave some optimistic updates on the use of virgin coconut oil (VCO) against COVID-19

- He announced that the VCO might prove useful against COVID-19 since previous studies have shown it could kill different types of viruses by destroying their cellular coating

- The DOST has provided funds to support further studies of the VCO on human patients, which would be headed by Dr. Fabrian Dayrit of Ateneo and Duke-NUS University of Singapore

- After the clinical trials are done and the results are positive, the VCO might need to get an approval as a supplement from the FDA

Anthony Sales, the director of Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Davao, gave some optimistic updates on the use of virgin coconut oil (VCO) against COVID-19.

According to a report by the Manila Bulletin (authored by Anthony Colina), Sales announced in a virtual press conference that the VCO might prove useful against COVID-19 since previous studies have shown it could kill different types of viruses by destroying their cellular coating.

“The VCO, based on previous studies, has been shown to degrade or denature the cellular coating of the virus or the viral envelope. Once destroyed, the virus will die as its components will be exposed,” Sales said.

For this reason, the DOST has provided funds to support further studies of the VCO on human patients, which would be headed by Dr. Fabrian Dayrit of Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and Duke-NUS University of Singapore.

“The next step of Ateneo is to do clinical trials. It will be tested on humans because it was previously only done on animal models. It was proven effective for animals because it has been used commercially for animals like chicken to prevent against avian influenza virus,” Sales explained.

After the clinical trials are done and the results are positive, the VCO might need to get an approval as a supplement from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Aside from the DOST’s update on VCO, Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the US National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, also revealed the results of an experimental drug for COVID-19 that they studied.

In a report by NBC News (authored by Erika Edwards), Fauci said at the White House on Wednesday that the said study involved 1,000 patients from different locations across the globe.

The patients involved in the trials either received a drug called remdesivir or a placebo.

Fauci said that the patients who received remdesivir were discharged from the hospital within 11 days compared to the 15 days of the patients who received a placebo.

Based on a report by The Guardian (authored by Sarah Bosely), Fauci also shared that 8 percent of the patients who received the drug died of COVID-19 compared to the 11 percent of the placebo group.
