It has been reported that the hospital bills of the late former Senator Heherson “Sonny” Alvarez reached about P8 million after he succumbed to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
KAMI learned that Alvarez was confined in a private hospital for more than a month.
In a report by the Inquirer (authored by Catherine Gonzales), the late senator’s son, Hexilon, shared more information about their situation the day his father passed away.
“Rough estimate is over P8 million,” Hexilon said.
“‘Yung gastos. Napakalaki. Kahit kami ay nahirapan po sa gastos. Hindi rin naman po kami saksakan ng may pera. Pero nagbabakasakali kami baka ma-reimburse kami ng PhilHealth dahil napakalaki po ng gastos. Sabay pa silang napasok. Hindi namin napaghandaan,” he added.
He also mentioned that the late senator and his wife, theatre artist Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, were admitted to the hospital at the same time on March 10.
However, Hexilon noted that it was his mother showing COVID-19 symptoms and his father was asymptomatic. Miraculously, his mother was able to recover from the disease.
On April 20, 2020, it has been confirmed that Alvarez passed away at the age of 80 due to COVID-19. According to his daughter Xilca, the late senator also underwent the experimental plasma therapy that could be useful in treating COVID-19 patients.
He served at the Senate for two terms from 1987 until 1998. Alvarez also served as the Secretary of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
