Standard cost of COVID-19 admission can break poor people's hearts

- The cost of treating patients with COVID-19 is very expensive and it doesn't fall below several thousand pesos

- Hospital bills of many recovered patients have reached up to more than a whopping P100,000

- PhilHealth declared that so far the highest cost of treatment that it is set to pay reaches up to P2.8 million

- Those in private hospitals can expect up to ten times more the amount that they would need to pay

The cost of hospitalization for COVID-19 is so expensive that it could literally crush the hearts of many poor people.

KAMI learned that as per the government's coverage, the amount needed to treat COVID-19 patients range between P43,000 to P800,000.

As per ABS-CBN, there were two patients who said that they were billed a hefty sum of almost P100,000.

Another patient recounted that he was billed P93,805 for being treated for eight days. PhilHealth shouldered P4,000 while his insurance shouldered P89,000. The actual amount that he paid was P170.

PhilHealth declared that until April 14, the agency will shoulder all costs of COVID-19 treatments. After this, the coverage will be based on 4-tier criteria.

The latest PhilHealth update, as per its president Ricardo Morales, on this 4-tier criteria is as follows:

Mild pneumonia- P43,997

Moderate pneumonia- P143,267

Severe pneumonia- P333,519

Critical pneumonia- P786,384
