Fact check: No, the Meralco and Maynilad billings for March are not ‘free’

- A social media post went viral after claiming that both Meralco and Maynilad waived the billings for March 2020

- However, it has been reported that the claim in the post was misleading

- Meralco and Maynilad did not waive the billing but the due date of the payment was extended

- The meter reading has been suspended as well, therefore, the bill will be based on the average consumption for the past 3 months

A post circulating on social media has claimed that utility companies such as Meralco and Maynilad Water Services Inc. are waiving their billings for the month of March 2020 amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) crisis.

However, KAMI learned that the claim in the post was false.

In a report by Rappler, the post went viral on social media and it contained the photos of Maynilad and Meralco.

“Good news!! March Bill libre na po munting regalo ng Maynilad at Meralco,” it read in the post.

As reported by Rappler, the post did not come from the official social media accounts of both Meralco and Maynilad.

Both companies did not waive the billings for March, but to help the Filipinos during the enhanced community quarantine, it offered a 30-day payment extension

Meralco extended its due date for all billings from March 1 to April 14. Meanwhile, Maynilad extended it from March 15 to April 14.

The meter reading was suspended as well. Therefore, the billing will cover the average consumption of the consumers for the past 3 months.

As previously reported by KAMI, President Rodrigo Duterte placed the entire Luzon under enhanced community quarantine to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

However, the enhanced community quarantine was extended from April 12 to April 30, 2020, as the number of COVID-19 cases in the country continues to rise.
