A social media post of a nurse at Philippine General Hospital (PGH) recounting the last few moments of her COVID-19 patient who happened to be a doctor went viral.
In a Facebook post, Nurse Gem, an intensive care unit (ICU) nurse for almost six years, shared how her patient bravely fought the disease.
“Sa halos 6 na taon kong nurse sa icu, isa na ata ito sa hindi ko makakalimutang duty,” she began.
“Bilang ICU-nurse, nasanay napo kami sa maraming drips,sa pag susuction, sa intubated na patient, sa mga bantay na naguupdate ng status, sa room na malamig..,pero itong araw na ito ay iba sa nakasanayan namin.”
“Nagsimula ang araw ko na malungkot,” she wrote. “Isa sa pasyente namin ang pumanaw, hindi ko man naranasan na makausap sya dahil sa tubong nakalagay saknya, pero alam kong lumalaban sya,..sa tuwing tatanungin ko sya ‘doc,ok ka lang po?,relax lang sir ah,pray kalang’ . Pipikit sya at tatango...pero ngayong araw na to,hindi na nya kinaya.”
The PGH nurse, however, did not disclose any information about the patient she called “doc”.
“Habang inaayos namin ang mga gamit nya, halos mapaluha ako,..marami syang dalang damit, pagkain, dala nya ang cellphone, laptop na para bang magbabakasyon lang at babalik din agad sa pamilya nya pero hindi ganun ang nangyari...”
Nurse Gem then described how the patient died alone without his family around him,
“Namatay syang walang kamag-anak na nasa tabi nya,walang anak na yayakap o hahalik man lang hanggang sa huling oras ng buhay nya,.napaka lungkot na hindi man lang nakapagpaalam ng maayos sa mga mahal sa buhay.”
