Senator Risa Hontiveros explained to House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano that Filipinos scrutinize the Bayanihan Bill of 2020 to ensure that the funds of the government are being handled properly.
KAMI learned that Hontiveros also mentioned that people want to avoid another P50 million worth of “kaldero.”
Through a Facebook post, Hontiveros aired her side directly towards Cayetano.
“Alan, there’s nothing deceitful about wanting the people to get the protections they deserve & making sure funds are being spent on what they really need,” Hontiveros wrote.
“People don't want another P50M kaldero,” she added.
The “kaldero” issue stemmed from the controversial P50 million cauldron used during the SEA Games that was hosted by the Philippines and organized by the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc) led Cayetano.
“Is it expensive? Yes. But is it worth it? It’s priceless, it’s a work of art,” Cayetano explained.
As reported by the Manila Bulletin (authored by Hannah Torregoza), Hontiveros said that she is alarmed by the potential abuse of the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act.
“I voted ‘no’ to the grant of additional powers to Malacanang because it grants the President unchecked powers that are open to abuse and corruption,” she said.
“It also grants the President a virtual blank check with no clear plan nor strategy to defeat COVID-19. Paano natin masisigurado na mapupunta ang pondo sa taumbayan?” she added.
CNN Philippines reported that President Rodrigo Duterte has approved the bill which seeks to give him additional powers to address the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Earlier, Duterte placed the entire Luzon under enhanced community quarantine to prevent the COVID-19 to spread in the entire Philippines.
