President Rodrigo Duterte sent a special message to the leaders of local government units regarding the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon amidst the COVID-19 crisis.
KAMI learned that the President told mayors and other local officials to follow all of the instructions that come from the national government.
In a report by The Philippine Star (authored by Franco Luna), Duterte said that the directives from the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases should be implemented by LGUs.
If the mayors and officials will not follow, administrative and even criminal cases might get filed against them.
"We are in a critical time [and] the national government needs your help during this time. Do not make this quarantine more difficult for our people than it already is.
"You are setting your own standards and making this lockdown more difficult for all," Duterte said.
The President did not specifically called out anyone, but Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto recently made headlines after asking the Department of Interior and Local Government and the Palace to allow tricycles to operate in Pasig.
As reported by The Philippine Daily Inquirer (authored by Matthew Revsio-Cruz), the DILG rejected Sotto’s request.
GMA News’s 24 Oras then reported that Sotto promised to submit to the national government’s decision on his request.
“Kami ho dito sa Pasig, magkocomply kami sa kahit anong direktiba ng ating nasyonal na pamahalaan,” he told 24 Oras.
KAMI previously reported about President Duterte responding to the complaints of people about the lockdown.
President Rodrigo Duterte became the 16th President of the Philippines in 2016, garnering over 16 million votes in the election. He is also an extremely popular president, consistently getting high-performance ratings in surveys.
