The coronavirus pandemic has caused a shortage of face masks globally, leaving people unprotected from the outbreak.

As a result, people are devising face mask alternatives, although less reliable, to help them become less exposed to the disease.

Recently, a photo from Agence France-Presse photographer showing a man wearing a plastic bag as a temporary substitute to face masks surfaced on the internet.

According to its caption, the man is a street vendor spotted in downtown Sao Paulo, Brazil on March 16.

Brazil on March 17 reported its first confirmed death from the COVID-19 outbreak, AFP news agency reported.

The patient is a 62-year-old man with a history of diabetes and hypertension died from the virus on March 16. The victim had no recent history of international travel.

The city of Sao Paulo and the state of Rio de Janeiro have declared a state of emergency in a bid to contain the virus.

Meanwhile, other AFP photographers also captured photos of some inventive persons from public places wearing their makeshift face masks.

“As panic over #Covid_19 spreads around the world so too is confusion over the best protection measures to take,” the news agency tweeted.

The shared post then gained reactions from netizens commending the resourcefulness of those in the photos.

“Resilient & resourceful people will find a way when they don't have means or opportunity,” one Twitter user commented on the tweet.
