President Rodrigo Duterte has recently placed the Philippines under a state of public health emergency due to the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak.

KAMI learned that the decision of the President came after the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed local transmission of the disease in the country.

In a report by the GMA News Online, President Duterte signed the Proclamation No. 922 on Sunday.

"The declaration of a State of Public Health Emergency would capacitate government agencies and LGUs to immediately act to prevent loss of life, utilize appropriate resources to implement urgent and critical measures to contain or prevent the spread of COVID-19, mitigate its effects and impact to the community, and prevent serious disruption of the functioning of the government and the community," it read in the proclamation.

According to the report by CNN Philippines, the Department of Health (DOH) said that under the proclamation, authorities can enforce mandatory quarantine for travelers.

The DOH also said that price freeze for medicines could also be implemented under the proclamation.

As reported by ABS-CBN News, the declaration will remain in effect until President Duterte withdraws or lifts it.

Earlier, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said that declaration would also allow easier procurement of medical supplies needed to contain the virus.
