PHIVOLCS: Magnitude 5.5 quake rocks some parts of Visayas

- It has been recently reported that a magnitude 5.5 quake shook some parts of Visayas on Monday morning

- The quake happened at 5:19 am eight kilometers northwest of Capoocan, Leyte

- PHIVOLCS reported that Intensity V was felt in Pastrana, Leyte and Tacloban City

- Authorities said that aftershocks are expected but so far those recorded were not as strong

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake rocked some parts of Eastern Visayas on Monday, March 2, 2020.

KAMI learned that the earthquake happened at 5:19 in the morning eight kilometers northwest of Capoocan town, Leyte.

In a report by the Inquirer (authored by Ador Vincent Mayol and Krissy Aguilar), the quake had a depth of 13 kilometers and aftershocks are likely to happen.

“The earthquake was moderately strong and was felt in the Visayas region,” said Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum.

As reported by the SunStar Cebu, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said that Intensity V was felt in some parts of Visayas.

  • Intensity V –Pastrana, Leyte and Tacloban City
  • Intensity IV – Ormoc City, Borongan City, and Naval, Biliran
  • Intensity II – Bago City
  • Intensity I – Roxas City and Masbate City

According to the GMA News Online, Solidum also mentioned that so far the recorded aftershocks were not that strong and had magnitude 3. He also advised people to have a presence of mind and not to panic.

“Huwag mag-panic... Kung puwedeng magtago sa mesa o sa sulok para maprotektahan ang sarili, gawin ito,” he said.

"Kung talagang mahina ang building o 'di na ginagamit, tumakbo palabas agad kung kaya pa," he added.
