Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte says he will do everything in his power to bring back the imposition of death penalty on heinous crimes; however, Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo, who is leading in the partial and unofficial vice presidential vote count, is vocal of her opposition to death penalty.
“I have been very vocal about this. I will continuously voice (my opposition to) its (death penalty) imposition even though it will be Congress that will decide (whether or not to bring it back),” Robredo, who is a lawyer, said.
Robredo said that imposition of the capital punishment of death is not the answer to the high crime rate of the country. She believes that it does not prevent the commission of heinous crimes, mentioning the instances of giving such penalty under the Marcos and Ramos administration.
Despite these opposing views, Congresswoman Robredo cleared that her opposition to the re-imposition of the death penaly should not be a source of conflict between her and the Davao City Mayor Duterte.
“In general, I will be supportive of him. In our impending partnership, there will be things that we will agree and disagree on,” Robredo said.
Meanwhile, Former Chief of the Commission on Human Rights and Presumptive Senator Leila de Lima also stands against the plan of Duterte to reinstate the death penalty.
De Lima said she is to “watch him (Duterte) first”.
“Let us observe the new leadership first. Let’s see and find out what his domestic and foreign policies. Let’s see. I just hope that he would always at all times uphold the Constitution, the rule of law and human rights,” De Lima answered when ask of her stand under the presidency of Rudy.
De Lima offered another solution instead. She said that fixing the justice system is the solution.
“I do believe that that is not the solution. The solution is to fix the justice system. The new executive should start with the strict and faithful enforcement of laws,” De Lima told reporters when asked about the issue of death penalty, especially now that Duterte is very open that he is to make ways to bring said penalty back.
