- One astronomer said that it is a “big deal” because it was the second asteroid to orbit the planet

- The “mini-moon” or the “2020 CD3” has the size of a car and has a diameter between 1.9-3.5 meters

The planet Earth has reportedly acquired a second “mini-moon” that has been orbiting the planet.

KAMI learned that the astronomers said that the asteroid has a size of a car.

In a report by the ABS-CBN News, the “mini-moon” or “2020 CD3” was observed by researchers Kacper Wierzchos and Teddy Pruyne at the NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona on February 15.

“Earth has a new temporarily captured object/Possible mini-moon called 2020 CD3,” Wierzchos wrote on Twitter.

“On the night of Feb. 15, my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Teddy Pruyne and I found a 20th magnitude object,” he added.

In a report by CNN World (authored by Ashely Strickland), Wierzchos said that discovering a new “mini-moon” is a “big deal” because it was the second asteroid to orbit the Earth out of 1 million known asteroids.

“The object has a diameter between 1.9 - 3.5 m assuming a C-type asteroid albedo. But it's a big deal as out of ~ 1 million known asteroids, this is just the second asteroid known to orbit Earth,” he said.

According toYahoo! News, the “mini-moon” is not expected to be orbiting the Earth for a long time. It is likely to drop out of the orbit near the Earth in April.

In September 2006, the first known asteroid to orbit the Earth was discovered. It was called the “2006 RH120” and it was seen using the Catalina Sky Survey.
