The deadly Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) has taken the lives of 26 people in Iran, according to the health ministry.
KAMI learned that among those infected with disease was Massoumeh Ebtekar, one of Iran’s 7 vice presidents who oversee women’s affairs.
In a report by The New York Times (authored by Farnaz Fassihi and Rick Gladstone), Ebtekar is the highest-ranking woman and the 7th official who acquired COVID-19 in Iran.
The vice president is now quarantined at home and members of her team have already been tested.
Meanwhile, Agence France-Presse reported that health ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour announced that there were 245 cases reported with 106 more cases confirmed in Iran.
It has been also reported that the Islamic republic has the highest death toll outside China where the COVID-19 first started.
According to Al Jazeera, even Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi who led to contain the coronavirus in Iran had been infected and has been in quarantine.
As previously reported by KAMI, Harirchi posted a video online where he confirmed that he tested positive for COVID-19.
The deadly COVID-19 has been spreading globally in all continents except Antarctica. About 2,788 deaths have been reported worldwide.
