A woman in Japan tested positive again for Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) weeks after recovery.

KAMI learned that this was the first Japanese case where the recovered patient acquired the disease again.

In a report by the Philippine Star, a woman in her 60s returned to her home by train after leaving the coronavirus-stricken Diamond Princess cruise ship on Wednesday. However, she developed a fever and tested positive on Saturday.

"There has been a judgement that those who disembarked after testing negative had no problem, but it has now become clear that those people can turn positive," Tochigi governor Tomokazu Fukuda told reporters.

Health Minister Katsunobu Kato apologized after 23 passengers were released without being tested during the quarantine.

Meanwhile, in a report by The Guardian, another woman working as a tour bus guide tested positive again weeks after she recovered.

“Once you have the infection, it could remain dormant and with minimal symptoms, and then you can get an exacerbation if it finds its way into the lungs,” said Professor Philip Tierno at New York University’s school of medicine.
