United States President Donald Trump has commented over the Philippines’ decision to terminate the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the US.

KAMI learned that the US President is “fine” with it and it would save the US government “a lot of money."

In a report by the ABS-CBN News, Trump has maintained that the US government has a “very good relationship” with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

"If they would like to do that, that's fine, we'll save a lot of money," Trump told the reporters at the White House.

As reported by the Inquirer (authored by Darryl John Esguerra), Malacañang said that the Philippines cannot forever rely on the United States for defenses.

“As the President says, if we keep on relying on the United States on our defense, our defenses will always remain stagnant or weak. We have to strengthen our own defense. We cannot be forever relying on the Americans for our defenses,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said.

Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) is the agreement signed between Manila and Washington in February 1998. It is the protocol for American troops in the country, including the lax visa and passport policies for American personnel along with the authority given to the US government to retain jurisdiction over military troops in case they commit crimes locally.
