Several social media posts have claimed that drinking water and keeping the throat moist will prevent 2019 novel coronavirus.

However, KAMI learned that the claim is false and misleading the public.

In a report by French news agency Agence France-Presse, the circulating post mentioned that the authorities have advised drinking lots of water to refrain from acquiring the deadly coronavirus.

“The prevention method now is to keep your throat moist, do not let your throat dry up. Thus do not hold your thirst because once your membrane in your throat is dried, the virus will invade into your body within 10 mins,” it read in the post.

“Drink 50-80cc warm water, 30-50cc for kids, according to age. Everytime you feel your throat is dry, do not wait, keep water in hand. Do not drink plenty at one time as it does not help; instead, continue to keep throat moist. Till end of March, do not go to crowded places, wear mask as needed especially in train or public transportation,” it added.

AFP debunked the claim and reported that the Department of Health (DOH) did not issue any advice that drinking water can prevent coronavirus.

Thus, the health department advised proper washing of hands and avoid close contact with anyone who has fever and cough.

As of February 4, there were about 105 people under investigation for suspected 2019 novel coronavirus. Two cases have been confirmed by the DOH and one of them already died due to the virus.
