Alibaba founder and Chinese billionaire Jack Ma has pledged to donate 100 million yuan (PHP733 million) to help fight against the 2019 novel coronavirus.
KAMI learned that the fund will be used to finance the research in creating a vaccine for the Wuhan coronavirus.
In a report by CNN Philippines, the remainder of the funds will be used for “prevention and treatment” measures.
Alibaba also announced that it would be donating 1 billion yuan (PHP7.3 billion) in order to fund the needed medical supplies for Wuhan and Hubei province.
As reported by Forbes magazine (authored by Giacomo Tognini), Microsoft founder Bill Gates’ Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced that it would be donating $10 million (PHP508 million) to help the first responders in China and Africa.
Other reports also claimed that Chinese tech giants like Baidu, Tencent, Huawei, and ByteDance have donated millions to fight against the deadly virus.
According to the South China Morning Post, about 170 people in China died due to coronavirus. Meanwhile, there have been 7,892 cases recorded.
Jack Ma is a Chinese businessman and co-founder of the Alibaba Group, a multinational technology conglomerate.
As of January 2020, Ma was acknowledged as China’s richest man with a net worth of $44.5 million.
