Fact check: Getting coronavirus by online shopping and shipping packages

Most of the items being sold by online shops like Lazada and Shopee are from China. However, some are being careful because the novel coronavirus spreading in China.

So, the main question is, can people get the novel coronavirus through online shopping?

As reported by the Esquire Magazine (authored by Mario Alvaro Limos), the Center for Disease Control (CDC) said that the transmission of the virus through packages is highly unlikely.

“In general, because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures,” it read.

“Coronaviruses are generally thought to be spread most often by respiratory droplets,” it added.

KAMI learned that the CDC also mentioned that there is no evidence released yet regarding the transmission of the virus through imported goods.

The Wuhan novel coronavirus can be transmitted through close contact with an infected person. It could be through being two meters away from the infected person or being in a room or taking care of the person with the disease for a long while.

Also, online shops like Lazada and Shoppe likely disinfect their items before sending it to their customers.
