The Philippine military has been gearing up to send its “biggest aircraft and ships” to the Middle East and bring home the Filipinos in the Middle East.
KAMI learned that this was the military’s response to President Rodrigo Duterte’s order to repatriate Filipinos amid the rising tension between the US and Iran.
In a report by the ABS-CBN News, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said that they are still planning their strategy and preparing the troops for repatriation.
“Si [Foreign Affairs] Secretary [Teodoro] Locsin naman ay nakikipag-negotiate, nakikipag-ugnayan sa mga ibang bansa doon kung ano pang kailangang mga papeles para pumasok 'yong mga tao natin and other logistics, kasi magpapadala tayo ng mga barko at eroplano. Saan sila lalanding, saan sila magda-dock, refuelling, supplies,” he said.
Through a Facebook post, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) shared that BRP Gabriela Silang is now ready to repatriate overseas Filipino workers (OFW) in the Middle East.
“The 83.6-meter Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) named “BRP Gabriela Silang” is all-set for its first-ever mission – to repatriate Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in case hostilities erupt in the Middle East,” it read in the caption.
It is considered as the largest OPV in the world to date, with a capacity of approximately 500 people at a time.
“Considered as the largest and most advanced aluminum hull OPV in the world to date, the BRP Gabriela Silang is designed to meet the demanding mandate of the PCG which highlights the responsibility to perform maritime search and rescue in service to the nation,” it added.
The Philippine Embassy in Iraq has raised Alert Level 4 in Iraq which requires mandatory repatriation of Filipinos.
In a previous report by KAMI, Iran launched more than a dozen missiles attacks against the US forces based in Iraq.
The attack was a response following the death of Iran’s top general, Qassem Soleimani, who was killed by a drone attack made by the US.
