Poe, Duterte Slam P26M Budget For COMELEC Uniforms
Both Senator Grace Poe and Davao mayor Rodrigo Duterte questioned the allocation of P26M worth of bib vests to be used as uniforms by the teachers who will be the election inspectors for the 2016 elections. According to the senator, Identification Cards (ID)'s are sufficient to ensure proper identification of personnel who are part of the Board of Election Inspectors (BEI).
"Kailangan din magkaroon ng identification ng mga teachers...pero siguro 'yung ID puwede na rin, ano? Para sa akin, siguro 'yung tamang prayoridad lang ng paggasta ng budget ang sanang tiningnan nila," said Poe in an interview.
P26,553,975 for 354,053 pieces of bib vests, or P75 per vest was the amount allocated by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for the BEI and its support staff.
'Should have been used for higher pay for teachers instead'
Meanwhile, Duterete spokesperson Peter Laviña said that, instead of spending the money on bib vests, it should have been used to increase the honorarium for the 300,000 teachers who will be serving as election inspectors in 95,000 clustered precincts around the country. For serving as election inspectors, teachers will be given P6,500 as honorarium for their service. It could have been increased up to P2,000 if no bib vests are to be purchased.
"We agree with our teachers to use this amount as additional allowance for BEI members" said Laviña. No reaction from the camp of Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago while Mar Roxas and Jejomar Binay's camp have yet to issue a statement on the matter.
