Many political controversies surfaced in the Philippines this year. From the comeback of Senator Bong Revilla in the Senate to the mishaps that happened before the opening of 2019 SEA Games.
KAMI listed the top 6 political controversies that happened in the country in 2019:
The Comeback of Bong Revilla
After the Sandiganbayan found Senator Bong Revilla “not guilty” of being involved in the alleged “pork barrel scam”, he made it back to the Senate successfully.
Despite the controversies Revilla faced when the issues regarding his misuse of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) broke out, Revilla won in the May 2019 elections.
Aside from his comeback in the Senate, Revilla is also set to make his return on national television. GMA Network recently announced that Revilla will be in their new show “Agimat ng Agila” by 2020.
Pre-SEA Games mishaps
Just days before the 2019 SEA Games officially started on November 30, many mishaps happened. The first issue was the multi-million peso cauldron used for the ceremonial lighting of the torch.
Many netizens questioned House Speaker and PHISGOC Chair Alan Peter Cayetano’s alleged “overspending” for the P50 million cauldron.
Aside from the controversial cauldron, the football team of Timor-Leste was also stranded at the airport for more than two hours only to be taken to the wrong hotel.
Supposed early release of Antonio Sanchez
Reports claimed that former Calauan Mayor Antonio Sanchez was one of those subjected for an early release due to the good conduct time allowance (GCTA) law.
Many condemned the possible early release of Sanchez as he was the suspect for the death of UP Los Baños students Eileen Sarmenta and Allan Gomez in 1993.
The Department of Justice and Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) have both clarified that Sanchez may not be released after all because he committed a heinous crime.
A few moments after, President Rodrigo Duterte fired Nicanor Faledon as the director of the BuCor.
Vice President Leni Robredo as drug czar
During a speech, President Duterte challenged Vice President Leni Robredo to take over law enforcement and stop the drug trade in the country.
Robredo was officially appointed as co-chairperson of the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (ICAD). She accepted the new post given to her.
However, Robredo was removed from her post after two weeks. The vice president said that she would be releasing a report of what she discovered when she assumed the post.
Imelda Marcos’ birthday guests rushed to the hospital
During the 90th birthday celebration of former First Lady Imelda Marcos, about 137 guests were rushed to the hospital.
As previously reported by KAMI, initial reports cited adobo as the reason behind the alleged food poisoning.
The incident happened last July 3 at the Ynares Sports Arena.
Ang Totoong Narco List
One of the biggest controversies that broke out this 2019 was the “Ang Totoong Narco List” videos. A series of clips claimed that President Duterte and his family were connected to the drug trade.
A certain “Bikoy” narrated supposed pieces of evidence that Paolo Duterte, Sara Duterte, and even Kitty Duterte were linked to the drug trade.
However, later on, Bikoy or Peter Joemel Advincula revealed his identity to the public and claimed that the opposition members like former Senator Antonio Trillanes, Senator Risa Hontiveros, and Vice President Robredo were behind the video series trying to discredit the Duterte family.
