- The site of the US Department of Agriculture has been viral on social media
- This came after a netizen noticed that fictional country Wakanda was listed among the trade partners of the US
- The USDA has already clarified the issue and the Wakanda information has been removed
- Wakanda is the country featured in superhero film Black Panther
The US government has recently made the headlines for its own list of trading partners.
KAMI learned that Wakanda, the fictional country in Marvel’s superhero movie Black Panther, was listed among the US Department of Agriculture’s foreign agricultural service’s tariff tracker.
The error was first noticed by Francis Tseng of the Jain Family Institute as he was doing his research on how deals can affect food distribution in countries listed as United States trade partners.
In a report by Time magazine, USDA spokesperson Mike Illenberg has clarified the issue. He explained that Wakanda was added to the system by mistake as they were running test officials.
“The foreign agricultural service staff who maintain the tariff tracker have been using test files to ensure that the system is running properly,” Illenberg explained.
He also mentioned that the Wakanda information has already been taken down from the system.
“The Wakanda information should have been removed after testing and has now been taken down,” he said.
A netizen shared on Twitter that the site showed Wakanda’s exports to the United States were sheep, horses, turkeys, and goats.
After the removal of the Wakanda information, BBC News reported that Orlando-based reporter asked:
“So do we, or do we not have free trade with Wakanda? Also, where are things at on negotiations with Agrabah?"
Black Panther is an award-winning superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It was about T’Challa or Black Panther who was crowned as the king of Wakanda.
