History post: 2 US Presidents who faced impeachment in the past

Impeachment is very rare in the United States. Just this Wednesday, the US House of Representatives voted to impeach US President Donald Trump.

KAMI learned that the other two US Presidents faced impeachment in the past.

Andrew Johnson

In a report by Time magazine, the aftermath of the Civil War caused the first-ever impeachment case in the United States. Former US Vice President Andrew Johnson succeeded the late President Abraham Lincoln.

The impeachment case of Johnson stemmed from his decision to remove his Secretary of War Edwin Stanton from his post in 1868. He breached the Tenure of Office Act.

It was stated in the law that the president cannot fire any high-ranking officials without the permission of the Senate.

Just three days later, the House of Representatives impeached Johnson with a vote of 126-47. However, Johnson was acquitted during the Senate trial.

35 people voted guilty, while 19 voted for not guilty. Only one more guilty vote would have met the required majority two-thirds and it could lead to a conviction.

Bill Clinton

As reported by the Business Insider, former President Bill Clinton began facing different controversies in 1994. He was accused of harassing his intern Monica Lewinsky.

In 1998, the news of his affair with Lewinsky got out. The White House intern had recorded conversations about the said affair and it went around in October 1998. Aside from the transcripts of the conversation, tapes about the affair were released to the public as well.

Clinton faced 11 grounds for impeachment. He committed perjury and lied under oath about his affair with Lewinsky, and he also obstructed justice.

However, the Senate acquitted Clinton on February 12, 1999. His perjury case had a vote of 55 not guilty and 45 guilty, while his obstruction of justice case had a vote of 50 not guilty and 50 guilty.
