Three of the remaining secure digital (SD) memory cards of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, were found in a dumpsite on Wednesday, May 11.
According to Kabankalan election officer Revo Sorbito, an election personnel, placed the SD cards inside a box; however, same personnel left the said cards and was not able to include it in the packing of SD cards for delivery to the Comelec provincial office.
The box, furthermore, was included in the trash picked up by garbage men at the Comelec-Kabankalan headquarters later in the day.
Sorbito revealed that they only discovered learned of the three missing SD cards after checking the box at the Comelec provincial office. Unfortunately, they could no longer find the SD cards in all other boxes.
The Comelec-Kabankalan sought the help of the community, specifically that of the scavengers, in retrieving said SD cards. Thankfully, Neca Sialsa, 24, and dump site caretaker Gina Regalado, 48, heeded the call and was successful in finding the SD cards.
According to Sorbito, Regalado and Sialsa found three damaged brown envelopes containing two SD cards. The third SD card was later found in the same dumpsite.
“One brown envelope was already damaged but there was no SD card in it,” said Sialsa.
The Comelec-Kabankalan promised a reward of P500 each.
Sorbito assured that no anomaly was involved in the loss of the said three SD cards. He further said that these have been submitted to the Comelec provincial office and have all been accounted for.
The winners, on the other hand, for the 2016 Election in Kabankalan City were proclaimed on May 10, just a day after the election was held both in the Negros Occidental city and in different parts of the country.
