Actor and politician Senator Lito Lapid has recently filed a bill seeking to extend the validity of the passports issued to senior citizens.

KAMI learned that under the bill, the passport of the senior citizens would last during their lifetime.

In a report by the Manila Bulletin (authored by Mario Casayuran), Lapid filed Senate Bill 1197 early this week.

It was stated in the proposed law that Filipinos aged 60 years and above will enjoy the benefits of the extended validity of their passports.

In the explanatory note, Lapid mentioned that the bill aims to “give comfort to the lives of our senior citizens."

As reported by the Inquirer (authored by Maila Ager), Lapid said that the bill will ease the burden of the senior citizens of going through the “rigorous” process of applying and renewing passports.

“Through this lifetime validity, our senior citizens are spared from the rigorous process and long lines often associated with passport application and renewal. This is also beneficial to senior citizens who live far away from city centers where DFA Consular Offices are usually situated,” Lapid said.

The lawmaker explained that the proposed law will emphasize the importance of senior citizens in society and it would serve as a way of giving back to them.

“From retirement pensions to free medical assistance to discounts in goods and services to express lanes – the list of benefits afforded to them goes on in on. This is a reflection of the importance and significance we ascribed to our lolos and lolas who have worked for and took care of us during their prime years,” the senator said.

“This is a way of giving back for their innumerable contributions to the family and to the community, as a whole,” he added.

Manuel “Lito” Mercado Lapid is a veteran actor who became a politician and served in the Senate from 2004 to 2016. In the May 2019 elections, he also won and made it to the “Magic 12.”
