A social media post has claimed that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has given a warning about a supposed magnitude 7.1 earthquake that would hit Metro Manila.

However, KAMI learned that the claim was misleading.

In a report by French news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP), the misleading post said that the supposed earthquake has a fault line of about 100 kilometers.

The post also mentioned the operation and evacuation centers in case the earthquake happens.

AFP conducted a reverse image search and discovered that the photo used in the post was from the poster of San Andreas film.

Through a Facebook post, Phivolcs announced that it does not release any prediction regarding when an earthquake can happen.

“MULING PAALALA MULA SA DOST-PHIVOLCS: Ang PHIVOLCS-DOST ay HINDI NAGBIBIGAY NG PREDIKSYON patungkol sa lindol,” it said in the post.

“What we do is prepare earthquake scenarios of hazards and impacts to be used as a guide for mitigation, preparedness, and response,” it added.

The Phivolcs urged the public to stop spreading fake messages or any false information to other people regarding the earthquake.
